I loved the colors of this yarn and the way it striped. I did not like having the stripe disrupted by the heel so I searched around and found one solution that fits me better than the short row heel.
Stripe Preserving Socks
Yarn: Socks that Rock – Firebird
Needles: 2.25mm dpns
Using twisted German cast on, cast on 64 stitches.
Join into a round without twisting
k1, p1 ribbing for 10 rows.
Knit rows until length of leg is 4 ½” from ribbing
Band Heel (worked over ½ of stitches – 32 stitches)
Heel Flap:
Row1: sl1, k to end, turn
Row 2: sl1, p to end, turn
Repeat rows 1 and 2 sixteen (16) times total
Row 1 (rs): sl1, k10, k2tog, k6, ssk, k to end, turn
Row 2 (ws) and all even rows: sl1, p to end, turn
Row 3: sl1, k9, k2tog, k6, ssk, k to end, turn
Row 5: sl1, k8, k2tog, k6, ssk, k to end, turn
Row 7: sl1, k7, k2tog, k6, ssk, k to end, turn
Row 8: sl1, p to end, turn
Turn heel:
Row 1 (rs): sl1, k14, ssk, turn
Row 2(ws): sl1, p6, p2tog, turn
Row 3: sl1, k6, ssk, turn
Row 4: sl1, p6, p2tog, turn
Repeat rows 3 & 4 six more times (7 times total)
8 heel stitches left
Pick up and knit 12 stitches on each edge of heel flap (64 stitches total)
Knit foot until 6” from heel (or desired length)
If needed, adjust dpns so that the 32 instep stitches are on needles 1 & 2 and the 32 sole stitches are on needles 3 & 4
Toe
Row 1, starting with needles 1: K1, ssk, K to last 3 stitches on needle 2, K2 tog, K1
Repeat on needles 3 & 4
Row 2: Knit
Repeat rows 1 and 2 until decreased to 14 stitches
Kitchner toe closed
Weave in all ends.
